Most importantly, you should know that an ultrasound screening:
- Is Non-Invasive
- Is Painless
- Does Not Utilize Radiation
- Does Not Involve Needles
- Is Completely Safe!
Ultrasound technology, regardless of what sort of study it is being used for, generally utilizes the same principles. The sonographer applies a small amount of water-based gel to the probe, which allows sound waves to be transmitted through the body and received back by the ultrasound machine. The probe is placed on the patient's skin and positioned so that it is able to capture a moving picture of whichever organ or system is being evaluated. The sound waves that are transmitted through the body by the machine are completely safe and painless. In fact, the person receiving the ultrasound won't feel anything to even make them aware that the sound waves are being transmitted.
Once the sonographer has captures all the images that are needed for the study or screening study, he or she will send these results on to a radiologist or cardiologist (depending on what the study is meant to evaluate) who will interpret the results. If it was a full study performed, the reader should be able to make a diagnosis based on the images. If the reader is examining a screening study, like those performed as part of the Live Safe screenings, he or she will make basic determinations and indicate whether further testing is warranted.
IMPORTANT: If you are receiving the Live Safe general ultrasound screening, it is important that you fast at least 8 hours prior to the screening so that the sonographer is able to successfully image the liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
